Trauma, the stress response, tinnitus and the role of meditation.
Of the many responses the body has to stress one of the most annoying and consistent is tinnitus.
Do you hear that high pitched ringing when everything goes quiet? Especially at night and the more you focus on it the louder it gets. Your brain is manufacturing sound because it interprets silence as a potential threat.
Audiologists discovered that most tinnitus isn’t ear damage, but brain hyper vigilance.
Your auditory brain cranks up sensitivity searching for sounds in quiet environments. Finding nothing it creates phantom noise to fill what it perceives as suspicious silence. Thru out evolution animals go quiet when threats approach.
Your brain still runs that program
Many clients usually male, complain of tinnitus when coming to learn to meditate with me. Anxiety, insomnia and lack of peace of mind rank higher, but its interesting as a side effect how many mention they also have ringing in the ears which bothers them. Some become aware of it more once experiencing the silence withon when they start meditating. Im alsways interested and excited to hear about the range of improvements and changes people notice in the first few days after starting. And this tinnitus iproving is one of those issues which responds very quickly, as quickly as within 5-10 days to the reduction in stress the physiology is experiencing.
Heres what actually helps tinnitus.
- Dissolve the ultimate cause, the chemical and structural changes that occured during trauma And which trigger your hyper vigilance. TM meditation is the only type of meditation proven to reduce stress, tinnitus, and the trauma response, even in VETS and those with clinical PTSD.
- Play brown noise quietly in background at a barely audible level.
- not white noise , brown noise, it matches the frequency of nature environmental sounds. Natural bird call is the best!

Your brain recognises this brown nose as no perceivable threat and reduces the signals to your brain that heightened awareness is necessary
- Add 2-3 drops of sesame oil to your ear canal when our brush your teeth. This oil will counteract the excess vata accumulation in the ear canal and can repair tinnitus caused by imbalances in the tissues surrounding the ear.
- Massage in small circles below your ears, (TMJ) for 30 seconds, these muscles effect your inner ear and this massaging was found to reduce tinnitus
The easiest way would be to learn TM meditation while at our COFFS HARBOUR RETREAT. Hear nothing but the waves and amazing variety of bird sound from dawn till dust. Bird sound tells your primal brain there is no threat. The forrest is thriving with activity and there is no danger.
